As well as looking out for local Somerstown Stars for our film project, the team here have also been looking at information about the Somerstown community.

We were surprised to learn that Somerstown is younger and more diverse than the city as a whole.

Diversity

The population of Somerstown is more diverse than the average population of Portsmouth as a whole.

According to the Census in 2011, over a quarter of Somerstown residents (27.3% or 3172) describe themselves as Black or Minority Ethnic (BME), compared to 11.6% for Portsmouth’s whole population.

Only 385 (3.5%) of Somerstown residents reported in the Census that they cannot speak English well or at all, compared to 1.2% across Portsmouth’s whole population.

Men in Somerstown have a life expectancy of 72.4 years, compared to an average life expectancy of 77.9 years for all men in Portsmouth and the national average life expectancy of 78.9 years.

Women in Somerstown have a life expectancy of 79.5 years, compared to an average life expectancy of 82.5 years for all women in Portsmouth and the national average life expectancy of 82.8 years.

The Somerstown Health & Wellbeing Neighbourhood Project is running gardening activities at the Community Garden in the Omega Centre.
